Full Moon Over Waters Series
In the Hellenic tradition, Selene is the Titan goddess of the moon — she who drives her chariot across the night sky, bringing light to the darkness. These paintings begin with her.
Made from direct observation at the ocean's edge — full moon, full tide, night in Maine — this series attempts to hold an experience that is simultaneously visual, physical, and total. The full moon over open water is cinematic and immersive. Standing inside that light, at full tide, the water and sky reveal things that ordinary daylight never shows. It is a full five senses experience — felt in the body as much as seen by the eye.
The series evolved over time. Earlier works stayed close to direct observation. Later paintings moved toward something less literal — reaching past the seen world into a more interior and imaginative response to the experience. That shift opened a deeper question: what cannot be depicted can perhaps be felt directly. That question led eventually to the breath-led practice that followed.
