Artist Statement
I am an interdisciplinary artist of Greek ancestry whose work explores identity, body, voice, home, and geography. My practice is deeply autobiographical, often incorporating public art, activism, and community-based projects. I work across various media—painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, poetry, and essays—embracing new ideas and tools to explore both personal and universal human experiences.
A significant shift in my work occurred after my experience with COVID-19 and Long COVID in 2021, which sparked a transformation in my approach. The series Long COVID reflects my exploration of emotional and physical fragmentation caused by chronic illness. Through disconnected forms and muted colors, I convey the surreal reality of living with Long COVID, inspired by techniques from Old Masters like Rembrandt and Goya. My intuitive painting process incorporates body parts—often my own—emerging from abstract backgrounds, using layered glazes to create contemplative compositions.
Poetry plays an integral role in my work, both as inspiration and guide. By distilling internal experiences into language, I intertwine thought, feeling, and form. Poems like "Wind blows through me; Bright light finds the empty spot in my mind" channel the transformative energy that drives my creative process. This synthesis enriches my exploration of fragmentation, wholeness, and the interplay between the physical and emotional, bridging the gap between abstract concepts and lived experience.
Fragmentation and wholeness are recurring themes in my work, symbolized by disconnected body parts and turbulent structures. These elements reflect the tension between loss and reintegration, and the search for meaning in the void. The human body symbolizes vulnerability, resilience, and transformation, often integrated with abstract backgrounds. Hands serve as symbols of action, connection, and the struggle for agency, while the interplay of light and dark underscores the dualities of hope and despair central to my practice.
The house, another recurring motif, symbolizes home, safety, and self. Depicted as turbulent or unstable, it mirrors the tension between belonging and alienation. Sometimes personified or merged with human forms, these structures explore the universal human longing for stability amidst chaos, echoing themes of both grounding and fragmentation in my work.
Another pivotal series, Unbound, explores themes of transcendence, liberation, and spiritual ascension. Works such as Homeless, Revolution, and Emancipation trace my personal evolution from darkness to light, both emotionally and spiritually. I begin by tracing my body onto the canvas, anchoring myself kinesthetically and emotionally. Short poems guide the work, transforming lived experiences into abstract, universal forms. For me, the word Unbound evokes abolition, deliverance, democracy, and emancipation. Through this process, I find liberation—art becomes a tool to transcend constraints and reshape experiences anew.
Nature and spirituality are integral influences in my work. Elements like trees, water, and horizons symbolize life, grounding, and spiritual awakening. Creating artwork outdoors, especially near bodies of water, deepens my connection with the landscape and informs my use of color and form. This relationship suggests the potential for healing through the natural world, a theme inspired by artists such as Winslow Homer and J.M.W. Turner.
More recently, I’ve explored neurographic art—a meditative practice that connects the unconscious and conscious mind through fluid line work. Writing words on the back of my artwork channels emotion and introduces new dimensions of color and pattern, inviting deeper reflection.
Throughout my career, I have drawn inspiration from a diverse range of creatives, including Byzantine iconography, El Greco, Mikis Theodorakis, Nikos Kazantzakis, and Constantine Kavafy. German and Northern Expressionists like Edvard Munch and Van Gogh resonate with my exploration of emotional depth, while Neo-Expressionists such as Enzo Cucchi and Sandro Chia inspire my interest in raw, energetic forms. Feminist and activist artists like Maya Angelou and Glenn Ligon influence my belief in art as a tool for social change and transformation.
Ultimately, my artistic journey is one of continuous evolution. Through art, I seek to heal, transform, and connect—to navigate personal struggles while addressing universal themes of resilience, liberation, and hope. Art, for me, is a means of becoming unbound.
